I would love to see a mountainous marathon. The problem is $$$ comes from hobby joggers who want to notch a fast time. So tough courses get less participants and therefore less money. And I don't think World Athletics will accept a bid for a tough course since they know time recognition is what works to get eyeballs. If you say someone is trying to run 2:0x, then you might get some spectators.
There is the golden trail series with televised racing and the main distance is around Marathon distance
Yes, but my idea would be to do something that would attract the top level road racers and marathoners. A hilly circuit on the road (or cobblestones) with some named, seriously steep climbs (like the Koppenberg in cycling) and descents rather than a mountain marathon. Make the length around 20K to 30K, so bonk isn't an issue, recovery faster, and so the pro racers can consider doing more than two races a year.
Instead of something like the San Francisco marathon (which I don't know the course for, but must be on pretty flat roads for the times run), wouldn't a 25K road race over some of the iconic hills in the city be more interesting to race and watch on TV? Maybe races in Europe could be promoted with the cycling classics. Tour of Flanders one weekend day, 25K road race over some of the same hills the other weekend day.
