yeah - just look what Amazon did ; )
Huge liability. Can’t tell someone to stay can’t tell them to leave
The real problem is that far too often weather channels 'cry wolf'. I'm from the Midwest, Iowa to be specific. Many many times in my life the tornado sirens have gone off, or we've been giving tornado warnings or tornado watches. I've never even been close to in danger due to a tornado. Just because there's a tornado warning doesn't mean you have to go home, they happen quite often and nothing happens. And if a real tornado does come you're probably not going to safely get home or wherever you're going before it hits, it's not like you have an hour of notice, it's minutes. So all of these people would likely be out in their cars driving home when the tornado hits. In a car doesn't seem like a safe place during a tornado.

Ok, give me all of your money. Prove that you are not greedy

Tornado shelters are a thing
The hypocrisy of all the whining of Capitalistic greed on a for profit running board using a smartphone made in sweat shop conditions and waiting on packages from Amazon.
If you don’t like big corporations, don’t buy their stuff. But the you wouldn’t be able to whine about it on social media as you are living off the land in the middle of nowhere.

How did this become a discussion about Amazon and big corporations? This is a family owned business. Accordingly...
"Mayfield Consumer Products was founded in 1988 by the Propes family and is helmed by CEO Troy Propes. The company, which brings in an estimated annual revenue of $28.97 million, employs more than 245 people and manufacturers candles and fragrances for several brands. "
But greed is not limited to big corporations. Small businesses can be greedy as well and put employees in potentially harmful situations. In some ways it is much easier for a smaller business to get away with treating employees poorly.
I didn't realize it was the law that I can go home from work every time there's bad weather.
Is anybody surprised by something like this from Amazon? Just read Amazon's guiding principles for its employees - it checks off a lot of the boxes for sociopathy. I grew up in Seattle, but can hardly stand going there now because it is full of Am-holes.

The foundation of capitalism is freedom. You cannot have capitalism without freedom.

If there’s tornado warning, isn’t it safer to stay inside and take shelter? I would think it would be safer in a factory then to be driving home.
It sucks thst the warehouse got hit but I would think a warehouse would be safer than in a car or in their own home. It just sucks that the tornado hit the factory.
Because your typical modern warehouse with 30 foot tall sheet metal walls is totally tornado proof.
Most houses have basements you can safely hide out in. A car can outrun a tornado, if you're able to keep track of it. Or you can find a bridge or culvert to hide under.

Maybe some people would have preferred to try and be with their families. The idea of threatening people with the loss of a job if they left for their own safety or to be their families with a tornado on the way is totally inappropriate.
Assuming that's what really occurred. But since lawsuits are inevitable what was really said/not said will come out under oath.
Odds man grounded wrote:I find it HIGHLY unlikely that was ever said, and the company denies that it was.
I actually find it HIGHLY likely that this was said.
Of course the company will deny it. They want to avoid lawsuits which have already started rolling in.
You also forget, this is the rural south. Quite far from any large city. A lot of agriculture crops grown in the area including tobacco on small farms.
I spent one summer working at a well established sporting goods store in Mayfield, KY while going to school at Murray State University about 20 miles away. It's a very different type of rural area. The courthouse that got the top blown off looks like it is straight out of "Back to the Future". Everyone knows everybody and they stay in their lane. This is why I have no doubts that the employees of the candle factory were told they needed to stay at work. They were busy filling orders for the Christmas rush. They couldn't afford to shut down. Most tornado warnings that are given never materialize but this one did.
