What if we change out NP's 5th man with a T-Rex. Then who wins?
T-Rex is not known for intelligence or tactical savvy.
It would follow Webb when he sprints away from the pack at the halfway point and fade badly.
No, we already know the answer to that question. Webb was gobbled up by the pack.
The all-time team of Ritz, Webb, Hall, Solinsky, and Rupp would win easily against the current Newbury Park team and narrowly against a Newbury Park team of Lex, Leo, and Nico Young (as a senior), plus Colin and Aaron Sahlman.
Ritz ran 14:10 solo on a course where Riley Hough, who just ran 14:10-15 at Running Lane, ran 14:49 or 14:50. That same year, Ritz also took third at World Junior XC champs, with Bekele 1st and a college frosh Teg in 5th. Ritz then ran 13:51 and 13:44.7 on the track. He was 4th at NCAA XC as a freshman, same as Nico Young. Ritz wins.
Alan Webb, who ran an easy 8:45 2M indoors and 3:59.7, followed by 1:47/3:53 HSR and Junior Record outdoors, was 20 seconds back of Ritz in xc on a warm, humid day in Orlando in 2000, but note that he had just done a monster workout with little relevance to xc. Fresh, he would have been competitive with Ritz and destroyed these boys.
Ryan Hall was further back at 14:55 and in that condition would have lost to all five of the reenforced NP guys. However, that was when he was undergoing accutane treatments that had worsened his ability considerably. It was later that winter when not being treated, I believe, that he ran a partly downhill 10 miler in a very fast time, as I recall. What I could find was just about workouts prior to his senior xc season (see below). He ran 3:42.7 outdoors, 4 flat equivalent.
HALL: I see myself as being very good at all of the distances, but I really like the mile the most. It’s what I’m the most passionate about, but I see myself as a good cross country runner as well. Hopefully, when I go to college I’ll do well in cross country which I think I’m pretty good at. I think I’ll do well at the longer distance (10k in college versus 5k in high school) because I’m doing 10 mile threshold runs now so 10k should seem shorter than that.
LETSRUN: What type of pace are we talking about for these threshold runs?
HALL: It depends on where and when I do them. I did one at 5:20 pace at lower altitude. Up here (in Big Bear), I did 8 miles at 5:26, but I’m getting stronger and stronger every week.
NP was doing 5:15 or a little better for 4M tempo at sea level in season, while Hall was doing 5:20 for 10M lactate threshold below Big Bear (no idea what altitude) but 8M at 7000 ft at 5:26 pace!
Solinsky was a great hs runner and was not challenged at all in his national championship, run in an exceptionally fast time, among the best ever. Nico alone from NP could have beaten him.
Galen Rupp lost Footlocker when Withrow ran away from the field and Rupp didn't respond in time, but this is a kid who was undefeated, I believe, prior to that race, and ran 13:37 5000m to break Lindgren's record (Ritz had been just behind Lindgren's time). He could time trial like no one's business and has to be above Sahlmans and maybe even Nico Young, but I'm going to put him behind Ritz, Webb, Young, Solinsky, and Hall.
