Magic Johnson has built a company that draws his meager NBA earnings.

the conversation is much more interesting if you just limit it to runners. not that there aren't a lot of compelling stories from other sports, but there's just too many to parse.
best - depends how you define it, but i'd put in another vote for pukin' bob kempainen. he won the olympic marathon trials as a medical resident and now he's a well respected cardiologist or internal medicine guy in the twin cities. not too flashy, but definitely a good standard of living. unless he's totally squandered his earnings both from running and doctoring, the dude could probably retire any time he wants. that's a good spot to be in.
worst - gonna have to go with alan webb. for his sake i hope he invested wisely with his earnings from his pro career. if not, it certainly looks pretty bleak for him with this high school coaching gig and whatever graduate school stuff he's up to. between that and his failed marathon comeback attempt i honestly feel bad for the guy in some ways. then again, he didn't have to go down the conservative culture warrior path.
PGA Tour golfers. They still have their health. they have a pension plan plus they can play as much on the Champions tour as much as they like.
For worst, it's hard to top Aaron Hernandez - although you could argue that he technically didn't retire.
Best: Suzy Favor Hamilton
Worst: Jose Fernandez
Seriously? No one has nominated OJ Simpson yet, for worst?
In college, wins the Heisman trophy and goes on to become one of the best running backs in NFL history. He retires, then goes on to murder his ex-wife, her boyfriend, and then does years in jail for armed robbery. It doesn't get any worse than that.
Roger Penske was a professional race car driver. He is now worth 3 billion dollars.
Dr. Kate Starbird. Naismith National Player of the Year, and now an associate prof at UW.
I've seen Serena in several commercials just recently although she hasn't quite realized she is retired.

And he slam dunked the HIV virus back when that wasn’t possible
Best : Seb Coe
Worst: Billy Konchellah
Ironic that the second paced the WR of the first.
Sportsmen in general - quite a few athletes have forged successful political careers off the back of their sporting fame. Imran Khan might be the most successful.
This topic again? Maybe do a forum search before starting a new thread? Seems like this comes up every few months. Here's one from a couple of months ago:

Shaq
Considering N.F.L. athletes did not make huge salaries in his era and how wealthy he is today, Roger Staubach is the most successful athlete ever, over $600 million.
OJ!
He's been making a killing since retirement.

Huh? “Conservative Culture warrior”? People can’t have their own beliefs now?

"done best" is subjective, but if you want the richest, see below. Dwayne Johnson makes some lists, but does he count? Quinn Cook is a 26 year old borderline NBA player currently playing in Russia who makes the list from having a rich dad.
I still like Junior Bridgeman who was a very good NBA player, jersey retired by the Milwaukee Bucks, who never made more than $350k per year but worked off-seasons with Wendy's and used his money to buy Wendy's franchises and built his $600 million wealth bit by bit from there.
