Dumb rule. Dumb to enforce a dumb rule. Also dumb to break this dumb rule. Everyone here is dumb.

The explanation given by the officials is that the rule states competitors using profanity SHALL be disqualified, rather than MAY be disqualified. The SHALL means there is no wiggle room.
I blame the coach too.
How many rules does the coach need to know and how many does he have to explain to his runners?

NFHS RULE 4, SECTION 5, ARTICLE 2: Unacceptable conduct by a competitor includes, but is not limited
to, willful failure to follow the directions of a meet official, using profanity that is
not directed at someone or any action which could bring discredit to the
individual or his/her school.
PENALTY: Disqualification from that event
So...it's legal to use profanity if it is actually directed at someone?

No. Apparently thats covered under "unsportsmanlike conduct" where as this was "unacceptable conduct". "Unsportsmanlike conduct" can result in full disqualification of the entire team. Even a ban if its egregious. This just pings the individual. And according to people on site, everyone could hear him clearly for 50 yards around and the officials looked for ways around DQing him but felt their hands were tied.

ARTICLE 1: Unsporting conduct is behavior that is unethical or dishonorable. It includes, but is not limited to: disrespectfully addressing an official, any flagrant behavior, intentional contact, taunting, criticizing or using profanity directed toward someone. This shall apply to all coaches, contestants and other team/school personnel.
PENALTY: Disqualification from that event and further competition in the meet.
If a sprinter uses profanity NOT DIRECTED at anyone after running the 100m, he is disqualified from the 100m but can still run the 4x100m and 200m later. If the sprinter uses profanity DIRECTED at someone after the 100m, he is disqualified from the rest of his events. The original post being about a cross country meet, there is only one race so it doesn't really apply. There are no other races to run that day.

I blame Shalane Flannigan - she did the same thing when she won the NY Marathon and everyone praised her so now kids like this think it is totally acceptable
Based on these idiot officials' logic, the Atlanta Braves need to relinquish their world series title they just won. Tom Brady and the Bucs need to be stripped of their Super Bowl title. Actually, all pro sports teams need to relinquish their championships for dropping F bonbs after they won.

As has been said before, there’s no chance this is upheld in every instance (football, basketball, whatever).
If he directed it someone, yes, give that DQ.
A elated combination of a few bad words after the biggest race of the year doesn’t do it for me.
Hope that official feels like trash.
I think officials forget that these things are supposed to be about the kids. Is DQ'ing him the best thing for him, or anyone else? Seriously.

Is there a rule in those team's sports saying that if profanity is used, the teams will be stripped of their titles?

…their hands were tied? Just don’t DQ him, it’s not that hard.
Haha, blaming Shalane Flanagan about something she did at a race four years ago. These kids where in elementary or middle school when that happend, and most of them probably have never even heard of her, let alone know about that race.
If immediately after finishing, dude has enough wind to shout a curse and enough energy to flex... he should sack up and run harder.
LAME! The kid is clearly pumped after his big race.
His coach should talk to the principal and the principal should talk to the games committee or whoever is in charge and get the dq overturned.
Did he say "gobble gobble MFer!!" ???

Nah Flanagan is a role model for the sport. I thinj its great that strong women use strong words when racing and winning. Just dont be a male

He's saving that one for NXR (closer to Thanksgiving)
While I disagree with the dq, I do get it. It’s a representation of your school. If a kid in my class said this after getting a right answer, there would be consequences. And we don’t want the next 50 people after him who also pr to shout out profanity at a sporting event geared toward kids.
