Similar thing has happened to me. The cartilage in my knees has worn away in places. Still running but only every second day for 3 miles. It was getting like this for a number of years beforehand though. Not recovering in the usual way. Hopefully its something different for you.
Two major reason for that:
1) Back in the days - people ran in super light shoes (no support)
2) Lastly, back then , everybody ran hard everyday (less recover time)
Interested in this as well. Tried most of the things in this thread with some success but not enough to get rid of the dead leg thing. Heavy lifting helped the most for me. Also Whey Protein shake after a run seems to help recovery, it's also recommended to take when you wake up. You can take it a step further with casein protein before you sleep. Otherwise I don't know. Maybe a ton of cruise intervals and one long run might be the best training plan for you.
