When you find a pair that agree with your feet, you definitely notice the difference.
The problem is, even performance socks can be a bit hit and miss. If they're too thin or slippery (which the stretchy nylon materials tend to be), then your feet will likely slide around in your shoes a little more, which can fatigue stabilising muscles in your calves and hamstrings.
However, I used to run in standard socks and would often get blisters and/or that soggy foot feeling towards the end of long runs.
