There have been countless great HS runners that competed during their freshman year of college. What makes Nico so different? That he ran extremely fast race times doesn't necessarily mean he trained harder than other people.
Nico's just special. And lots of top colleges redshirt kids, so their bodies can mature more. Look at NAU, sometimes Georgetown, BYU (technically the kids are doing mission stuff). Nico trained a lot harder than many high schooler. His mileage was high, as that was part of Sean Brosnan's ideology. Sure, a lot of people train high mileage (Great Oak), but Nico trained high mileage with quite a bit of intensity. So all of this is done so that for Nico's final two years, he will be a year older than the competition.
What if he wants to graduate within 4 years and then sign a pro contract.
The main thing is he is one of the most talented runners ever to cone out of HS and he is ready to compete at the collegiate level. Many high school runners push themselves to their limits in interval training. From what I've read, Craig Virgin hammered every speed workout and most of his races, but still managed to finish in 10th at the NCAAs the next Fall.
