PS. It will never heal. The scar tissue continues to grow. It will only get worse until you remove the damaged nerve.
I had one for a couple years, and it DID heal. That problem has been in the rear-view mirror for about 6 years now, without surgery.
I went to Hoka Cliftons (cushy, high stack height) to allow me to continue running at all. I wore Cliftons for a couple years then was able to go back to running in shoes I liked. At it's worse I could not run on any trail as the thought of stepping on the smallest of rocks in the wrong place was horrifying. Road only for a long time. I did the shoe modifications that an earlier poster mentioned, got a pair of ABEO metatarsal flip-flops to wear in the house. Those ABEO's were key, I am actually wearing them as I type this. They are still the most comfortable footwear I own.
I believe that my switch to Altra shoes (why change what works, idiot?) is what brought on my MN. At least, MN onset coincided with wearing Altras for a few thousand miles.
Anyway, I have made a complete recovery from MN. Sadly I'm older and slower.
