He's been reppin the Brooks shoes the past few videos along with all his posse... this would not be surprising at all...
People here act like it's guaranteed he could run faster than 3:39 if he runs more than 65 mpw. That's not guaranteed at all - maybe 65 mpw is the exact right amount of mileage for him, and if he would run more, he would get slower or the quality of his workouts would suffer.
That's like saying Brazier could run 3:30 or something if he did more than his 40-45 mpw.

I'm not talking about him making a living thanks to this youtube channel, selling merchandise etc.
I think he can have some good pro races, but I don't see him ever breaking 3:37 on 1500, or 3:56 on mile.
What do you think ?
Even if he runs 3:32 he is likely to make more from YouTube and merch than from the sport of athletics.
That's the sad state of affairs in this sport.
It's a sport for amateurs who can afford to forego a normal job, or for the dreamers in poverty with nothing to lose.
I was living in poverty in Boulder right out of college, running just like Spencer (not enough mileage, too many flashy, fast workouts), never racing or TT'ing, and couldn't outrun life. Tell you what, finishing a few too many spots back at USA's is fun for about ten seconds.
Not that I wouldn't do it again, given the opportunity, but I'd certainly train differently.
The pathos of the channel is good.
My money is on Ari making it, not Spencer.
Spencer is creating good content. He himself is no longer the entire focus. They are in Boulder, with a few other runners, and doing the channel. It is fun to watch, even for an old man like me.
This is work, and he is pretty good at it, even with no equipment beyond a fon. No studio sound equipment (or does he?), no storyblocks footage, no Osmo camera gimble thing. He is good at putting together a short chapter, and is now adding other personalities. Some shagging needs to occur to make it much more interesting.
Again, my money is on Ari.

Who is Ari?

Ari Klau, 4:19 miler

I think a lot of people here are overlooking how much of an incentive a pro team would have for signing him BECAUSE of his youtube channel. It doesn't really matter if you he is slower than a dozen+ guys in the NCAA if he's one of, if not the most, well known. Pro squads will take this pre-established fame into account, so I wouldn't be surprised if he gets offers from teams with average PRs waaaaay out of his wheelhouse currently.
Look at zach levet, the guy couldn't even make the olympic marathon trials but nike is training him because they see value in his brand.

Why does he have a mustache

Well, right now there is no professional track and field. He's only got 50k subscribers, so he'll need to more than double that to pull in the $15k/month that Sage Canaday gets from YouTube for his 200k subscribers. It's a time game that is exponential. Look up the history of Mr. Beast. Fascinating going from 6k subscribers to almost 40 million!!
This is dumb. Youtubers make between $3000 and $5000 on every million views. Canaday probably hasn't cracked 3 millions views for his entire youtube "career"

That's wrong, it used to be around $1,000/1m views for mid-range YouTubers (30-200k), now it's more like $500/1m views. People vastly overestimate what mid-sized YouTubers make, it's a very top-heavy business (the million+ YouTubers also get better deals and contracts).
But most money comes from sponsors, $15k/month sounds a lot for a running YouTube but it all depends on how often he is promoting products and what companies are willing to pay him.

Was getting tired of the special kids vanity sh!t
Ari kid seems to have his head screwed on right, keen to see his progress.
Healthcare is so expensive without the right coverage packages, so I don't blame him. I was get nickeled and dimed but one the scale of $50 here .. oh another $300 there.. and he may have regular health care needs like PT or chiropractor

Probably not:

Pretty sure Ari time trailed at 4:01 before moving out to Boulder, seems like he could drop some great times soon.
his 3k is 3:58 mile equivalent so likely.
I'm assuming Ben is a smart guy. Whos his agent? Why not negotiate an employee contract with performance incentives? That's what I did back in the day. Not only did I get health insurance and performance based bonuses, I also got COL raises. Not sure, I think I got profit sharing on top of that.
Ultimately I think he can legitimately be elite without his YouTube channel propping him up, but not as an 800/1500 guy. That's why I think he is wasting his time running 65MPW. I don't think anyone here would try to suggest that someone can be elite at distances 10k and up running such low volume.
I know they are different runners but look at a guy like Joe Stilin. His 1500 PR came in 2012 yet he didn't even attempt a 10k until 2018. If you're a sub 4 minute guy or thereabouts and are not even in the conversation to make a national team I don't see the point in wasting years and years of your prime for a breakthrough that likely won't come. I think many are just so enamored by the allure of being a miler that they stay hanging in there and when they do move up it's too late.

Hey Malmo, virtually every single profession has seen workers/employees/laborers get worse deals with the gutting of labor laws and the financial rewards of sociopathic business practices. Looks like it's made it to pro running as well.
