I've seen a lot of talk before about the best runner to not win gold or even medal, but I am wondering who was best runner to never even make the team.

Salazar did run in the 1984 Olympics, but yeah there were probably some good guys from 1980 who missed their chance. Tony Sandoval?
Weldon Johnson
Chris Solinsky
Don Paige belongs somewhere on the list. Won the 800m at the 1980 "trials to nowhere", missed the team in 1984. Happened to be my favorite runner when I was a kid.
On the track I'd agree with Joe Falcon.
He was a 6 time individual NCAA champion including XC, indoor mile and 3000m, outdoor 1500m and even 10,000m.
He was ranked number 3 in the world in 1990 behind Morceli and Simon Doyle (Australia).
That year he won the USA 1500, the Dream mile in 3:49 and the Goodwill Games 1500.
Not only did he never make an Olympic team but he also never competed on a World Championship team.

Injuries
Falcon
Chris Solinski in his prime
If ze Solinsky had not achieve injury, we believe he continue his career strong competitive and promising. 2008 he missed. 2012 and also 2016 were examples.
middle distance and distance ability beyond that of history (Americans). Of course now witness many super proficient European descent athletes but all do make the Olympics. Mr. Solinsky is the footnote peculiar
It is hard to believe that Solinsky having run 12:55, the fastest ever by an American born runner along with being the first American under 27 flat, did not make an Olympic team.
But he did run in the 2009 WC and made the finals.
Mark Curp held the half-marathon WR. Don't think he ever made an Olympic team. Can anyone confirm?
Mary Cain
At least in recent history, I agree with those saying Chris Solinsky.

Sprinter Steve Williams

No scholarship limits anymore! (NCAA Track and Field inequality is going to get way worse, right?)
