4:03.13 for third. At least he has the auto for the 3000m.

Anywhere from 4:04-3:53. I'll go with 3:58.

No that wasn't a prediction, it already happened. 4:03.13 for third
From the splits it looks like he led up until the last lap..
Serious question here. What happened to him? injuries?. He obviously is more talented.

I'm surprised.
i watched the race and it looked as though fernandez was running smooth clicking off 30s but then he started hurting with about 600 to go and on the last lap the arkansas guy took the lead and the tulsa guy went with him. Tulsa dude went off with like 100m to go and german didn't respond just finished it in.
Seems like he's fit but doesn't have that racers edge, at least he didn't in this race. he did win conference last week. i'd say most likely he was just tired. prolly shouldn't have raced but instead rest up and prepare for nationals.
How about Kirubel Erassa? 4:05. Oklahoma State is going to be really good next XC season.
I've always defended Smith, but I also don't understand what's happening. He was so amazing two years ago, what happened?!
7:53 is still not bad....
For him it absolutely is. He ran 7:47 two years ago, while sick.
It is getting depressing. I suppose there must be injuries that have just constantly slowed him down.
Hope he really comes back some day.
how about scott gillespie huh! check out his high school PRs..156 in the 800, 420ish in the 1600, much less the mile. now a 4:01 guy who just outkicked THE german fernandez? give this man some props for working hard and just going for it in this race where he PRed by 8 seconds
I don't care about Scott Gillespie, I have followed German for years and want him to do good. Why would I be excited about him getting beat?
That's nice, a car for the winner
I seriously hope that German is back to his true potential soon because it has become depressing. He's pretty good at keeping things positive and not allowing others to see his internal emotions, but he can't fake it forever. There is a large contingent of folks that would love to see him dominating (ala freshman season) again and has to painfully watch him underperform as he find ways to keep himself positive/motivated/believing.
Again, I know he doesn't show it but this HAS to be difficult for him to manage week in and out. Hopefully, the same thing that keeps him motivated will be the same that gets him to reach his full potential: his belief in himself and will to win. But let's be honest, his running 4:03mi would be like Ritz running 13:50 5k (very, very good high school times). It would be (is?)devastating.

Always an excuse even for his better performances. He didn't run 7:47.9 sick, he made himself sick and injured running times that were beyond his talent level.
Anybody else think Dave just doesn't want German to run too good and consider joining Jerry's group right now and not be able to deliver another National championship in cross country?
He ran times above his talent level? It must be over 9,000!
When he ran 7:47 he already had a full year's worth of hard training/racing. He lost most of that fitness with anemia issue last year and really it will take him all the way up to his senior year to be 100% back.
That's just how it is. You can't just turn on a switch to be back at your old self. Look at Mottram and Tegenkamp. They are also sloooowly getting back.
I would say just be patient and endure one more outdoor season of "mediocre" performances. I have confidence that he will have a senior season for the NCAA record books. His senior season also coincides with the Olympic trials so I also wouldn't surprised if that is the end goal for him.
2011-2012 prediction:
1. A few more NCAA records
2. Outdoor NCAA champ
3. Olympian.
Will not win XCs. Just not his specialty.
