DNF, Oregon Twilight.
Ducks need the points at NCAA's, and he isn't coordinated, or into it enough to do.
Square peg in a round hole, coach!

I'm surprised someone of Vin Lanana's caliber of a coach would let one of his athlete's try the steeple without having the form and technique down first, and it's not like this is his first time racing a steeple, either. Especially when he could be used elsewhere. 9:35's and DNF's are just embarassing for a sub 4:00 miler.
Yeah, but they got too many 1500 meter guys this year, and Puskedra is having a Soph Slump, and there is no one who can step up in the Steeple, 5,000, or 10,000... So Vin's asking some guys to step out of their comfort zone and step up for the team...trying to eek a few more points for a national title...
One of my best friends went from 9:25, to 8:49 with 3 steeples...
yeah, but AJ went from 9:35 to DNF in 3 steeples

...He wouldn't be the first to sand bag the Steeple.
Tons have.

What exactly is "form and technique"? Dan Lincoln did quite well even though he lost ground over the hurdles. The steeplechase is a DNA event -- you either got the gene or you don't. You're not going to learn the gene.
Some coaches just don't 'get it' when it comes to the steeplechase. Remember when Schumaker (arguably the best coach in the country) kept trying to forced Brandon Bethke into the event that he wasn't suited for? I couldn't figure that one out, either. Now Lannana with Acosta.
I'm both impressed and saddened by Acosta. Impressed by his turnaround, going from a complete flake to a consistent performer that you want to see do well. Saddened that he's being wasted by his coaches on the steeplechase.
It was quite clear if you were actually at the meet that he dropped out because it was PLANNED. He looked quite pleased with his effort and he looked good!

that's total bullshit quote. said by people who don't want to take the time to coach and improve. true, some catch on easier than others, but no such thing as being born to do ANY event.
bullshit.

Believe what you wanna believe kid. Talent for the steeplechase shows early.
Are you suggesting Schumacher didn't want Bethke to improve. Lannana doesn't want to waste his time with Acosta? Is that what you're saying?
aj wants to be back home in oceanside in the sun and the surf. it's boring there in meth ville. only a few months to go, aj, hang in there.
aj was pacing the race....
Do you know how far he ran/at what pace?
He ran up to the first water jump and pulled off. From what I hear he doesn't go near water without a surf board.

You obviously did not have the gene.
details please? wrote:

I believe he went 2k. He ran out in lane 2 (and sometimes 3) for most of the race to make sure Bassett and the Wake Forest guy had room to clear the jumps. I've watched every race this year and AJ looked the most comfortable in this steeple than the other 2 (or 3 races.)

8:40? Dream on. He was running 9:00 pace and couldn't even finish slogging through that.
AJ for QOTD right here:
"I'm ready to do it all. I'm ready. I'm a workhorse. Put a load on my back, and I'll get it done."
