Indian Path Medical Center & SunTrust Bank Crazy 8s 8K Run
2010 Race Plans Unveiled - Defending Champ Cheprot, plus 3 Other Former Champs Return
6-16-10
Kingsport, TN
On Saturday night July 17th at precisely 9:58 pm, when most people are turning down their covers and preparing for a good night’s sleep, the streets of Kingsport will once again awaken with runners for the 21st running of the of the Indian Path Medical Center & SunTrust Bank Crazy 8s 8K Run. Crazy 8s, the World’s Fastest 8K, is a Kingsport sports tradition and one of the most popular events in Kingsport’s Fun Fest.
In 2009, little known Simon Cheprot from Kenya ran away from the pre-race favorites down the stretch and broke the tape in J. Fred Johnson Stadium in 22:20.7. That time, while still about 18 seconds slower than Peter Githuka’s 22:02.2 world mark established in Kingsport way back in 1996, was still the fastest 8 kilometer time in the world last year. Crazy 8s officials announced today that Cheprot will return to Crazy 8s and defend his Crazy 8s crown.
“We’re still the world’s fastest,” boasted co-event director Hank Brown. “We had the fastest time in the world last year. Simon came here and surprised everyone, including me. We’re very happy to have him back.”
Cheprot, however, will not be the only past champion checking their bags for Kingsport on July 17th. A total of four past men’s champions will crowd the lead pack blazing through the world-famous candle-lit, figure-8 course. Those four are Cheprot, 2007 champ Simon Ndirangu (Kenya), 2006 champ Julius Kiptoo (Kenya), and 2001 champ Alene Emera (Ethiopia). These four kings will be gunning for the Gastroenterology Associates $5,000 Men’s Dash For The Gold, given to the first male to cross the finish line. They will also be in hot pursuit of Githuka’s long-standing world record and the Regional Eye Center $10,008 payday for the first man to break the mark.
“I can’t remember when we’ve had four past champions in one race,” said Brown. “That’s pretty incredible.”
Ndirangu came to town in 2007 and ran to an eye-popping 22:15.9 victory, a time which ranks 7th all-time at Crazy 8s. Many still remember Emera’s stirring 22:03.4 performance in 2001 when he inexplicably let up in the final stages of the race, missing the world mark by just over 1 second. Kiptoo, who has been a Crazy 8s favorite for years, has finished in the top 5 three times.
Last year, Crazy 8s gave out unique “8-Man” medals to the first 2000 finishers in the 8K, courtesy of The Regional Eye Center.
“The medals were extremely popular,” said John Williams from The Regional Eye Center. “We were very pleased with the excitement it generated in the 8K. This year we will give out medals to the first 2300 finishers.”
The menu of Crazy 8s activities actually kicks off on Friday evening, July 16, with the Lively State Farm Crazy Mile in downtown Kingsport. The K-8s Dog Walk, an untimed fun walk for dogs and their owners, will bring up the “tail” of the Crazy Mile. The Crazy Mile will take place just prior to the Fun Fest Parade in downtown Kingsport.
The McDonald’s of Greater Kingsport Little 8s Youth Field Day will kick things off on Saturday with fun field day activities for kids and families. The age group runs will feature races for toddlers to 12-years old with distances from 100 yards to 600 yards. Special 8s will return this year with races for individuals with special needs.
Neil's Walk, presented by Cardiovascular Associates, Holston Medical Group, and Eastman Credit Union, is one of the largest walks in the area with over 800 participants. Named for Neil Danehy, who died suddenly from a heart attack in 2005, the walk and the Neil Danehy Heart Foundation were created to raise awareness and help combat coronary heart disease. This non-competitive 3k event will start on Ft. Henry Drive and return to finish inside the stadium. Last year, Neil’s Walk raised $11,500 for the Foundation.
The United Way of Greater Kingsport Healthy Lifestyles Expo will feature over 30 health and fitness related vendors and booths. The expo will be in the Dobyns-Bennett parking lot outside the stadium, and will open to the public at 5:00 pm Saturday. Those who stick around after the Awards Ceremony might be lucky enough to win the $1000 Midnight Mad Money given away by Bill Gatton Honda. Winner must be at least 18 and must be present to win.
