Spain's Marathon National Record Holder And Drug Cheat Julio Rey Retires At 37 By LetsRun.com According to Spain's El Diario Montanes, Spanish marathon record-holder, world championship medallist and convicted drug cheat Julio Rey is retiring at age 37. His retirement comes less than a week after his final marathon in Amsterdam, as back pains that have dogged him for three years have become too difficult to endure. Rey has a personal best marathon time of 2:06:52 set in Hamburg in 2006. He finished second in Paris in 2003 to secure the IAAF World Championship silver medal in the marathon. Twice he won European championship bronze. He won Spanish titles in the 10,000m, half marathon and cross country championships. Rey won the Hamburg Marathon four times after returning from a two-year drug ban handed down by the IAAF in 1999. Rey ran under 2:10 in the marathon seven times. Rey announced, "I'm not going to be sad because I've had great successes and, above all, I leave the sport knowing that I am the current Spanish marathon record holder."
