Incredible run in Seoul, but looked like he really wanted to go another 100M.
Any ideas to what he is training was like?

I saw Butch train on several occasions and was close friends with a coach on the women's staff at OSU at the time. He did little to nothing for someone at that level of performance. He was so injury prone that less was better. I saw him warmup on the indoor 200 track with 2-3 laps jog, stretch for 5-10 minutes. He ran a few half-hearted strides of 50-60 meters, then a 200 in the outside lane of about 26 seconds, an absolute jog for him. He did a few more half-hearted 50 meter strides, jogged a lap, called it a day. He went to the weight room which was within eyesight of the track, did 1 set of 5-6 squats with 135 on the bar. The women throwers were rolling their eyes at Butch. That ended the session. My friend said that was about normal. Maybe someone who saw him more often can elaborate. Wonderful person in my several interactions with Butch.
Saw Butch at Stanford in the early 90s. SFH was training there also. She was doing 400 repeats, but far too slow. No chance to develop her fast twitch muscle fibers with that workout.
Id be more interested in Burt Reynolds training.

I think he worked with Brooks Johnson for awhile. Was he still there at the time?

Are you talking about his relay leg?
Since he was upset in the open 400.
I'm not trying to speak for the OP, but Butch ran a terrible 3rd 100 and a great final 100 looking very strong at the end.

He was more into motor sports, and when he did try his hand at endurance activities, it was paddling.

Both. Sure, he was upset, but he still ran sub 44 and looked like he left too much in the tank the way he was closing on the 19 year old!, Steve Lewis.
Anybody have training info on Steve Lewis?
I heard that Butch's brother use take his drugs test for him. They look almost alike and his brother would show up and go into the drug testing room to take the test for Butch.
Later there was a drug lawsuit that Butch filed and Butch won, because he knew he did not take the test.
Butch Reynolds was known as Harry Reynolds when he was merely a 48 second 400 meter high school runner for Akron Hoban. He went to a Kansas junior college for 2 years and qualified for the 1984 Olympic Trials and made the semi-finals and ran 46.9.
His breakthrough was when he set a WR for non-altitude in the 400 in an early season rainy meet at Columbus and ran 44.0.
I watched him win the NCAA meet. He was a tall and heavier 400 runner. Looked more like an NFL tight end next to leaner guys like Danny Everette or Roddie Haley. He would take the first 200 out super fast (close to 21.0).
I know nothing about his training but he was part of the rejuvenation of the event which right before his breakthrough was stuck at 45 flat. Breaking 45 was a big deal in the mid-1980's. And the WR was 43.7 something still from 1968.
Butch kind of burst on the scene at OSU by setting an indoor 300 meter world record. The event is not run regularly, but it garnered attention Later that spring came the 44.0. Don't forget in addition to the rain, it was cold if I remember correctly.
As far as his brother Jeff testing for him: Yes they looked alike if 3-4 inches shorter and 30+ pounds lighter is "alike".
Training:
1) unwrap vial.
2)install needle
3) inject in a$$
4) dispose of waste carefully
