Use any valid criterion.
I choose Star Wars. Its bemore of a lasting cultural icon. Also it was more fun to watch.

Wow, that's tough. For me, It's Harry Potter with Star Wars in a close second.
Movies: Star Wars
Books: Harry Potter
Lord of the Rings was good in both categories, but those are my picks.
Star Wars, but only if it's the original trilogy. If the prequels are included, then LOTR.
no option for star tracks????
Not trolling here.
I read the Lord of the rings books and liked them. I thought the movies were outright bad.
Haven't read Harry potter, but I think the movies are bad an aimed at a middle school audience. The acting o the kids in Harry potter literally makes me cringe during the movie. They are AWFUL.
Star wars the first 3 and ESP the first two are epically made movies
Emma Watson is a babe... so Harry Potter.
1) LOTR - because Zeppelin named dropped it
2) Star Wars - grew up on it
3) Harry Potter - kids grew up on it
ALL of the starwars "waahhhh only the first three (really the last three) were good" SHUT UP, They are all good. Youre all idiots.
The first Star Wars series was epic.
But as a whole, one character ruined the other Star Wars series. Jar Jar Binks was a horrible horrible addition.
Although if I had to chose which rerun to watch now, it would be Lord of the Rings.
LOTR hands down. Nothing comes close to those books.
With regard to pure movie entertainment, I guess Star Wars is close, but there is too much schtick IMHO.
Harry Potter is good, I liked the books and what I have see of the films, but they aren't in the same category as LOTR.
None of the above.
Harry Potter for sure. Probably more of a generational thing, as I grew up with the books, then continued with the movies.
True

Star Wars.
Maybe in 30 years you can ask the question again and get a different answer but the first movie came out 34 years ago. I would have to say the entire Star Wars franchise is as popular now as it was then. Clone Wars cartoon, Star Wars Lego, Lego Star Wars games. I have two boys and have to say they are into it as I was 30+ years ago. Their friends have Star Wars birthday parties and play Star Wars on the playground. I don't know if the other two will have that type of staying power.
follow up question. If you could experience one of these for the first time all over again which one would it be?
LOTR ftw. Never really got into the Harry Potter stuff, but I really liked Star Wars when I was a kid.

I'd have to point out right now that the Fellowship of the Ring came out nearly SIX DECADES ago...
And the third movie garnered ELEVEN ACADEMY AWARDS
True, but was it a hit when released and have a lasting following from 1954 until the first movie in 2001. Maybe it did, but I wasn't really aware of the novel until the first movie came out. I haven't been able to get into Lord of the Rings so I really don't know. I am sure that will change though as the kids find the movies and want to watch each one 10 times.
