Thread title, waiting to post results, some by Irene Riggs in 9:52. That MUST be the most girls under 10 in a single race, I imagine? I remember the days when a HS girl running sub-10:20 was a huge deal. The future is bright in women’s distance running!
Riggs is a terrific runner but Hanne Thomsen in 2nd in 9:55.31 really impresses me. She's only a sophomore and her smooth running form is something to build on.
Hanne ran a solid conservative race early, then worked her way up. She had Riggs in her sights near the finish, watch out for Thomsen in the months and years ahead.
I was hoping one of those girls was going to run Riggs down. That was probably some of the most ridiculous pacing from a good runner I've seen in awhile.
She could have had the same results just by running 74s.

I think you are being hard on her. She ran low 9:50s last year and was probably targetting 9:40 or fast this year. Her first 800 was a little fast at 2:22. But whether it was a bad day, or she just was not ready for sub 9:40 on her own, it didn't happen. This race was very similar to Tuohy's 9:47 (on her own).

A very impressive race indeed. Riggs is super solid. Personally, I think that shewould have run much faster if she had chosen to sit at the fron on the pack for 1200m(?) then run hard from there to the finish. She was 3:35-36 at 1200mcpmpletely SOLO. There is another post that mentions the gal in second. She wasperhaps the smoothest of the bunch. At the meet, I mentioned to a co-worker, that if i were a college coach, she would be the one that i would be recruiting (I did not know that she is a SOPH). A phenomenal night at ARCADIA.

Brilliant commentary here... come on, many, any college is going to recruit a 9:55 girl. Heck, any girl sub-10:20.

Love all the Thomsen love here all of a sudden. Remember, this is a kid who won the CIF 3200 Championship last year as a freshman, chasing down senior (now UW frosh) Sophia Nordenholz who left nothing on the track going for that title. Also beat names like Sam McDonnell and Payton Godsey and Riley Chamberlain among others in that race. So her performance here made sense. Still eager to see how she develops over the course of her high school career and if we get a Engelhardt - Thomsen matchup in the 32 this year at CIF or if Engelhardt is going to focus on 800/1600 again.

Everything seems to point to Engelhardt staying with the the 1600. As far as the 800 is concerned after Mackenzie Browne's 2:03 last night I'm not sure Engelhardt wants to go up against her.
